Home Safety Checklist
Walk through the home with this checklist before adding home care or deciding whether a move is needed. Focus on areas where accidents or confusion could cause harm.
Floors and walkways
- Are rugs secured or removed?
- Are walkways clear of clutter, cords, and furniture?
- Are thresholds between rooms level or marked?
- Is outdoor access safe — steps, ramps, lighting?
Bathroom
- Are grab bars installed near the toilet and in the shower or tub?
- Is there a non-slip mat in the tub or shower?
- Is the water heater set below 120°F to prevent scalding?
- Is the lighting adequate for nighttime use?
- Is a shower chair or tub bench available?
Bedroom
- Is the path to the bathroom visible and clear at night?
- Is there a nightlight or motion-activated light?
- Is the bed at a height that allows safe transfer?
- Is there a phone or call button within reach of the bed?
Kitchen
- Are frequently used items within safe reach?
- Is the stove being used safely? Are burners being left on?
- Are expired foods being identified and discarded?
- Is the refrigerator stocked with safe, current food?
Medications
- Are all medications organized with clear labels?
- Is a medication list kept current and available to family or caregivers?
- Are medications stored correctly — away from heat and humidity?
- Is there a system for refills before running out?
Emergency readiness
- Are emergency contacts posted in a visible location?
- Is there a medical alert device or monitored system?
- Is there a fire extinguisher and are smoke detectors working?
- Does the person know how to call for help if alone?
